Why I Started Wesley

Hi, I’m David, founder of Wesley.

Before starting Wesley, I spent five years as a product manager at Intuit, working on QuickBooks. That experience gave me the opportunity to meet accountants, understand their work, and see how much small businesses depend on them.

It also left me with a question: What would accounting software look like if we designed it around the firms doing the bookkeeping?

That question became the starting point for Wesley.

Working on QuickBooks showed me how much accountants needed software built around their work

Accountants and bookkeepers do much more than maintain records. They turn incomplete information into reliable books, help business owners understand their finances, and make sure the groundwork is ready for tax season.

They also played a major role in QuickBooks’ success by recommending it, teaching clients how to use it, and building their practices around it.

But over time, I felt that their needs were becoming less central to the direction of the product.

Intuit’s marketing sometimes reinforced that feeling. Its TurboTax “tax break up” campaign, which encouraged people to switch from their tax professional to TurboTax, drew criticism from the accounting community. For me, it highlighted a broader tension: accountants wanted a technology partner they could trust to support their work and their client relationships.

I wanted to build a company where that partnership was the starting point.

Rising software costs made simple bookkeeping harder to deliver profitably

There was also a practical problem: the economics of bookkeeping.

Many firms provide bookkeeping for small businesses with relatively straightforward needs. Their clients need accurate books and financial statements, but they may rarely, or never, log in to the accounting software themselves.

Yet the firm still has to pay for the software used to maintain those books. As QuickBooks prices increased, those costs became harder to absorb. Passing them on to clients wasn’t always easy, either.

Meanwhile, Intuit’s shift toward QuickBooks Online, including ending new subscriptions for several Desktop products, pushed firms to reconsider tools they had relied on for years.

I saw an opportunity to build something focused on these firms: software that made everyday bookkeeping easier and made sense for the clients they served.

I started Wesley to put accountants’ workflows at the center

A business owner managing one company’s finances has a different workflow from an accountant maintaining books for dozens of clients.

For the accountant, the same work repeats across clients and across months: collect statements, enter transactions, categorize activity, resolve questions, and prepare financial statements.

Even small inefficiencies add up when you repeat them hundreds of times.

That is the workflow we are building Wesley around. Our goal is to help accountants spend less time on repetitive processing and more time reviewing the books, applying their judgment, and serving their clients.

AI handles more of the routine work. The accountant stays in control.

Wesley connects statement intake, transaction categorization, and financial reporting

We started with the work that takes up so much of a bookkeeper’s day.

Wesley extracts transaction data from bank and credit card statements, reducing manual entry. It uses transaction history and context to categorize transactions and help accountants make consistent decisions.

We also build features that make review easier. Wesley can group similar transactions together and show how comparable transactions were categorized in the past. Instead of reviewing every item from scratch, accountants can use that context to work through transactions more efficiently.

And the workflow continues beyond data extraction or categorization. Wesley supports bookkeeping through journal entries and financial statements, keeping the work in one platform.

The goal is straightforward: fewer repetitive steps between receiving a client’s records and producing books you can stand behind.

Our sweet spot is bookkeeping that the accountant manages from start to finish

Wesley is especially well suited to accountants and bookkeepers who handle the books on behalf of small business clients.

These are often full-charge, write-up, or after-the-fact bookkeeping engagements. The client provides statements and supporting documents, and the firm maintains the books and prepares the reports.

Our sweet spot is straightforward bookkeeping, particularly cash-basis clients, where the business owner does not need to actively operate QuickBooks.

For these engagements, the accountant is the primary user. We design around that reality: what you need to process the records, review the work, and keep your clients’ books moving.

We want Wesley to become a platform you can rely on as your bookkeeping practice grows.

Accountants’ feedback is what keeps me building

The most meaningful part of this journey has been hearing from the accountants using Wesley.

Some tell us they have wanted a platform like this for years. Others have asked about working with us or even investing in the company.

That encouragement means a lot. So does the candid feedback: when something doesn’t work as expected, when a step is confusing, or when a missing feature makes their day harder.

Wesley is still improving. We have plenty of work ahead of us. But hearing directly from accountants makes the purpose of that work clear.

We’re building something people want to use in their daily work, and they care enough to help us make it better.

We’re building Wesley alongside the accounting community

That is why I started Wesley: to build accounting software around the people who maintain the books every day.

We will keep listening, improving, and earning the trust of the firms that choose us. My hope is that Wesley gives accountants a dependable foundation for serving more clients and building a stronger practice.

If this sounds like the kind of platform you’ve been looking for, I’d love to hear from you.
